There is a mountain called ‘Nine Horses Painting Mountain’ sitting next to Li River in Guangxi, China. It is famous for its cliff that looks like a Chinese ink painting of horses, thus the name. When our boat were cruising towards the cliff, the tour guide asked us kids to find the nine horses. ‘Whoever spots nine horses is as great as our first premier, Zhou Enlai, as he was the first person who spotted the nine horses.’ The tour guide said.
Kids started to look for the horses. Some couldn’t find any. Some found five to seven. A few found nine. I spotted eleven. I kept trying to find more till I was confused, simply because it was fun. But I kept it as a secret as I thought no one would believe me. How can one be even greater than our premier? That’s impossible. It was the first time I realised how differently everyone perceived the world. But why? I was too young to try to find out how our brains work. I forgot everything about our trip to Guangxi, except this beautiful mountain that looks like an ink painting of 11 horses, not nine.
Only till now, having been working primarily with image making and fed with endless visuals from the Internet, have I realised how much our thinking unconsciously makes associations with our past experiences – among all, things we see, for the ‘visual’ type like myself. To explain why I saw a few more horses than other kids in the same trip, it was probably because I had been exposed to a lot of visuals since I was at a very young age. Mostly kids books, my great grandmother’s old Chinese pictorial story books, animations, video games. On top of everything, I read a lot about Greek mythology, half of which I couldn’t understand, but probably helped to trigger my imagination.
Given the enormous amount of visuals we are exposed to today, things I see through my mind’s eye have become more complicated, if not less pure than through a child’s eye. If I ever visit the Nine Horses Painting Mountain again, I probably find more fridge magnets than beautiful horses – Sad but true. Well at least I am still enjoying the process and discovering something wonderful in our everyday life. This time I am sharing them with you, because there is no competition with other kids nor Zhou Enlai, and I know you will believe me.
